About Ring Slings

What Is a Ring Sling?

A ring sling is a baby carrier made from a length of fabric secured through two rings. Learn how its structure differs from other carriers, what to consider before use, and where to find the full PsLing wearing instructions.

Fabric, Rings, and a Supportive Pouch

Carrying babies in cloth has long been practised in many parts of the world. A ring sling adapts that simple idea by passing one end of the fabric through two rings. The threaded fabric forms an adjustable loop around the wearer, while the remaining fabric creates a pouch that supports the baby when it is prepared and worn correctly.

The rings lock the fabric under load. Fit and adjustment therefore depend on correct threading, an evenly spread shoulder section, suitable pouch depth, and following the product-specific wearing sequence.

What Makes a Ring Sling Different?

Continuous fit adjustment

Fabric can move through the rings before loading, allowing the loop and pouch to be prepared for the wearer and baby. Adjustment while carrying is limited; follow the PsLing instructions.

One-shoulder construction

The fabric travels over one shoulder and across the torso. Comfort depends on spreading the shoulder fabric and positioning the sling correctly.

Soft, packable form

A fabric-based carrier can fold more compactly than many structured carriers. Actual bulk and care requirements depend on the fabric and product.

Ring Sling and Structured Carrier: a General Comparison

PointRing slingStructured carrier
ConstructionFabric secured through rings, worn over one shoulder.Often uses shaped panels, straps, buckles, or other fasteners.
FitPrepared by moving and spreading fabric through the rings before loading.Adjusted using the system provided for that particular carrier.
PackingUsually soft and foldable; actual bulk depends on fabric and design.Bulk varies widely with padding, panels, and hardware.
Suitable stageNever assume suitability from carrier type alone. Check the specific product instructions, the baby’s development and health, and any stated limits.
CareMaterials and washing methods differ by product. Follow the care label and manufacturer instructions.

This comparison describes broad construction differences only. It is not a safety ranking, and it does not establish that one carrier type is suitable for every wearer or baby.

Essential Checks Every Time

  • Keep the baby’s entire face visible and make sure neither fabric nor the wearer’s body covers the nose or mouth.
  • Prevent the chin from being pressed onto the chest, and support the neck and back.
  • Prepare the pouch and remove slack according to the PsLing instructions before relying on the sling for support.
  • Practise low over a safe surface with another responsible adult present until the sequence is familiar.
  • Recheck the face, airway, position, fabric, rings, and your own balance frequently throughout use.

Consult a doctor before use for a premature or low-birth-weight baby, a baby with respiratory symptoms, or whenever you are uncertain.
