Brand Story

The History of PsLing

One piece of cloth, changing the time a parent and child share.

PsLing began with a culture of carrying encountered overseas.
The craft that followed travelled from Tokyo to New York.
Today, every piece is still made to support the time a parent and child share.

The culture of carrying a baby in a single piece of cloth

It began with a culture of carrying seen overseas

In the 1990s, while working on overseas research in the field of health and medical care, PsLing’s founder encountered mothers carrying their babies with a single piece of cloth.

It was more than a childcare product. It was an everyday form of knowledge that allowed parent and child to stay naturally close and move through daily life together.

Wrapping a baby and bringing them close to the parent’s body was a beautifully simple idea. Recognising something essential in that way of carrying became the beginning of PsLing.

Craft that began in a small atelier

After returning to Japan, that idea took form as a piece of cloth. Handmade baby slings went on sale at the Sasazuka atelier in 2000. In 2001, PsLing began selling online as a specialist sling maker.

The word “sling” was still unfamiliar to many people in Japan. Even so, the wish to make carrying more comfortable and more beautiful gradually spread through the voices of customers.

Keeping the work in human hands

Times have changed, and so have the ways PsLing reaches its customers. What the brand values, however, has remained the same.

Each cloth is selected, sewn and finished individually. Because it will hold a baby, PsLing has continued to value the judgement and sensitivity of the maker’s hands over production efficiency.

Made by hands.

That approach still lives in every PsLing today.

From Tokyo to New York

PSLING NEW YORK CORPORATION was established in 2005, followed by the opening of a directly operated store in Manhattan’s SoHo district in 2006.

PsLing proposed a way of carrying that was not only functional, but also beautiful as part of what a person wears. The idea resonated with design-conscious New Yorkers, allowing PsLing to extend its path overseas as a baby-sling brand from Japan.

Still close to the time parents and children share

Today, PsLing works primarily online, helping each customer find a piece suited to their way of life.

The pleasure of choosing a colour. The comfort of wearing cloth. The reassurance of bringing parent and child naturally close.

Carrying is not simply a means of transport. It is part of the time a parent and child spend together.

PsLing will continue to support that time with care and beauty.
